The Tasmanian School Canteen Association uses the National Healthy School Canteen guidelines to assess whether a food or drink is suitable for a school canteen menu. The guidelines are based on the current Australian Dietary Guidelines and use a traffic light system to categorise foods as GREEN, AMBER or RED. The Tasmanian School Canteen Handbook has some general information on what foods are categorised as GREEN, AMBER or RED.
The National Healthy School Canteen guidelines also use nutrient criteria to determine the traffic light rating for commercial products.

The Tasmanian School Canteen Association promotes GREEN and AMBER products to Tasmanian school canteens through our Product Guide, which is distributed to all schools at the beginning of each school year and is also available online. The Product Guide is currently updated every school term. To be included in our Product Guide your company must become a corporate member and have your products assessed as either GREEN or AMBER against the National Healthy School Canteen guidelines.
