SILVER reaccreditation for Burnie Primary School

Project Officer Maria Scanlon with Shandel Pile at the assembly presentation

Congratulations to Burnie Primary school for attaining SILVER reaccreditation! They first earned SILVER in 2011 when the canteen was managed by Jill Stuttard and Margaret Bryant. After their retirement in 2013, Julie Bloom took on the position, and she did a great job in maintaining their SILVER rating. Julie continued in the role of Canteen Manager until 2015 and after her retirement, the Burnie Community House was engaged to operate the canteen.

Shandel Pile, the Burnie Community House Project Coordinator, oversees the running of the canteen. Shandel and her team at the Burnie Community House commercial kitchen have created a delicious menu made up of mostly home-made dishes such as chicken curry & rice, crumbed chicken bites, pizza, pasta bolognaise and chicken or beef patties. The TSCA team really like that a small garden salad is on offer to accompany the canteen made dishes and the AMBER pies, sausage roll and hot dog.
Shandel says, “we appreciate being able to work with Burnie Primary, providing capacity building opportunities and valuable experience for volunteers and staff.  We highly value our relationship with the students, staff and parents and look forward to continuing this and providing tasty, nutritious menu options.”

Under Shandel’s management and with the support of the Burnie Primary school community, the canteen has continued to uphold its SILVER canteen accreditation, which means this school has been accredited for the last seven years – what a fantastic achievement!
